The traveling continued but this time it was for fun (not that the work trips aren't!) and with the family. We loaded up the camper and the truck and set off for our annual trip to Blacksburg for a Virginia Tech football game! Always a highlight of the year. We stopped at our normal halfway point, Walnut Hills, and had a great time as usual. They were all decorated for Halloween and had their maze up. The kids loved finding their way through (so did I) and then playing at their awesome playground. Of course dinner was at Edelweiss - never disappoints.
The next morning it was up with the sun and on the road to Blacksburg! Always get such a thrill when we see the Virginia Tech sign on 81 and we know we're almost home. Pulling onto campus still gives me goosebumps. We got to the golf course and got a great spot to call home for the next two nights. Bonus - Mark pulled in just a few minutes later as he was joining us for our Hokie weekend!
After we got all set up it was off to Macadoos for lunch - because where else would we go!? So good! After lunch I took Sadie for a long walk around campus - introducing her to all my favorite spots - my old dorm, the Arch where my buddy John and I would sit for hours talking, the pylons, Burruss, and of course the duck pond!
This weekend was actually homecoming so it made for some extra special activities. We started our football Saturday with breakfast at Gillies - nothing compares and the boys have come to look forward to their delicious hot chocolate. We could hear the Homecoming Parade in the distance. After breakfast we did some shopping at the book store and then it was back to the camper to start our tailgate. Right behind our tailgate spot is the alumni center and hotel where they had a huge homecoming celebration set up. There was a petting zoo, tons of inflatables, food and drinks, and live music. The kids had a ball!
Before long it was time to head to the stadium. It was just Mark, Adam and myself as Harper and Andy would watch from the camper. We had decent seats and before we knew it we were jumping and cheering as Enter Sandman filled the stadium and our beloved Hokies came running onto the field! Absolutely nothing like a football game in Lane Stadium! Turns out there was really nothing like that game as we clawed our way to victory over UNC after 6 overtimes!!!! I'll admit I left the game early wanting to beat the crowds but Adam and Mark stayed and they now have a story and experience they'll never forget! I missed out but I'm so glad they had that moment together.
The golf course was full of cheering Hokies and could just feel the sense of pride everyone had in their alma mater! The perfect ending to another fantastic Blacksburg weekend!
